This document provides guidance on health protection to employers whose employees may be exposed to avian influenza viruses. It also provides technical information (in appendices) about AI viruses and, in particular, about H5N1, a rare yet fatal AI virus currently circulating in Asia, Europe and Africa. This document updates guidance on avian flu issued by OSHA in March 2004.

This collection of chapters from OSHA’s Technical Manual provides guidance for sampling air contaminants and assessing the extent of skin exposure. The document covers basic information related to air sampling, essential instructions for acquiring documented and valid exposure data, and guidance on the potential for skin exposure to chemicals in the workplace and the available means of assessing the extent of skin exposure. In addition, the document provides a broad overview of the types of equipment and instrumentation available for use by OSHA personnel, and an instruction guide for the handling, packaging, and shipping of industrial hygiene, safety, and construction samples.

This document guides employers in crafting a contingency plan for the event of a global outbreak of influenza. Identifying the difference between seasonal, pandemic, and avian influenza, the document describes the proper planning that allows employers in the public and private sectors to better protect their employees and lessen the impact of a pandemic influenza on society and the economy. The document offers guidance based upon traditional infection control and industrial hygiene practices.

Due to some negative reports from patients and medical practitioners experiencing health problems from their medical environment, the MMWR presents certain guidelines for environmental control to minimize the risk of exposure to bacteria and pathogens. This report reviews previous guidelines and strategies for preventing environment-associated infections in health-care facilities and offers recommendations.

This fact sheet aims to educate employers and workers about the West Nile virus and to offer ways to reduce the risks of infection. It includes information concerning the ways the virus spreads (particularly through mosquitoes), signs and symptoms of infection, the risks it presents to outdoor workers especially, and specific protective measures which employers and workers can adopt to avoid the illness.

This pair of fact sheets informs the reader about Ebola virus. The first sheet discusses the spread of Ebola and the safe handling and transport of contaminated materials. In addition, it provides infection control guidelines for waste workers. The second sheet provides a PPE selection matrix which offers guidance for occupational exposure to Ebola.
